I’m a big fan of coloring as a meditative practice. Both my partner, Elizabeth, and I have coloring books we do regularly. It’s a great way to slow down, be present, and leave the thoughts behind. So, I had a friend here who is an artist make us some mindful coloring pages. Madalina made these specifically for the site, and I hope you enjoy!
The Benefits of Mindful Coloring
There are many potential benefits of mindful coloring. Although we might think of coloring as an activity for children, coloring can help us in many ways. Here are a few ways mindful coloring can support your wellbeing:
Anxiety Relief - A 2020 study found that twenty minute of mandala coloring significantly reduced feelings of anxiety. Participants also felt more calm, at ease, and psychologically better in general.
Wholesome Distraction - Whether you’re tired, experiencing burnout, or angry, coloring can offer a fairly wholesome distraction. Rather than averting from your discomfort with something harmful, coloring offers a creative and present way to get out of your head.
Emotional Processing - Much like journaling, many people find coloring to be a useful way to process emotions. I myself experience this, and often recommend it to my students as one route to processing emotions.
Play - As adults, we often take things much too seriously. We lose sight of the need for play. Creating space for play has many benefits, including reducing stress, fueling creativity, and increase problem-solving abilities.
